Protective Layer

2020

Protective Layer begins with the concept of a shelter. The shelter, as an example of architecture intended for extraordinary circumstances, is pars pro toto for forced isolation. Selected defensive structures: the prewar bunkers of the Hel Fortified Area on the Hel Peninsula; the bunkers of Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair; the Nazis’ underground Project Riese, in the Owl Mountains; contemporary private shelters. These were referenced in the implementation of the project’s paintings and painting installations.

A bunker, as a type of defensive structure for military or civilian use, fulfills the function of protecting against external threat. At the same time, its characteristic form is impregnated with an element of oppressiveness and dread. The histories embedded in specific structures also resurrect a dramatic past. The structures themselves remain immovable. Their interiors are usually dark and cold, set deep in the ground, reinforced concrete poured into fortified geometries. Today, they are mostly approached as touristic attractions.

Aside from historical remnants, there are also modern private shelters, built from the 1950s onwards. The wealthy can afford them. Employing the parlance of developers of high-rise condos, manufacturers of modern bunkers use attractiveness and amenities as a selling point: “Bleak gray corridors? Not here! In our bunkers, you will find movie theaters, hydroponic gardens, medical clinics, gyms, and even spas!” The popularity of private shelters in recent years allows us to speak of a fashionable trend, driven by an increasing premonition of societal collapse and anticipation of a prophesied apocalypse.

With a change of perspective, it turns out that a bunker can become one’s home, body, and state of mind.

Sites visited (from left):

Wolf’s Lair

Between 1941–1944, “Führer Headquarters” of Adolf Hitler and the High Command of the Wehrmacht. Located in the Gierłoż Forest, near the German village of Gierłoż and town of Kętrzyn. In 1940, the decision to construct the Wolf’s Lair was made after reconnaissance of the Gierłoż Forest. Situating the complex in this part of East Prussia, which was one of the most fortified regions of the Third Reich, took advantage of the Kętrzyn Forest’s proximity to the border with the Soviet Union. This area would become the staging ground for Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the USSR. The area chosen for the headquarters was located at a distance from communications arteries. Mixed, old-growth forest acted as a natural year-round shield for the complex. The Masurian Lake District provided an additional obstacle for Allied land forces. The complex’s walls were camouflaged with a mixture of seagrass and green dye, which, when mixed with mortar, created a naturally irregular and porous “plaster.”

Sęp Heavy Combat Bunker

Heavy combat bunker for machine guns and anti-tank guns. Main position of Poland’s Jastarnia Center of Resistance on the Hel Peninsula. Owing to difficulties in concealing the structure, which was therefore at high risk of being shelled, the bunker was fortified with reinforced concrete of a greater thickness than that of other shelters: average ceiling 160 cm thick; external walls 125–330 cm; internal walls 60–100 cm. There were two potential attack routes along the peninsula. One was along the path of the nearby road and railway. The Sęp bunker was a buffer against the second route: armored fighting vehicles rapidly attacking along the exposed coast. Construction of the bunker began in 1939. Armaments allocated for the bunker included an anti-tank gun, but the dome with anti-tank gun was not delivered to the peninsula in time for the outbreak of World War II with the Germans’ invasion of Poland. Because the shaft was never blocked, the structure had been used as an open observation station. From 1940–1945, the position was held by the Germans for the purposes of anti-landing defense.

Riese Project

Riese (German: Giant) was the code name for a secret Nazi construction project, including a tunneled complex beneath the Owl Mountains and the adaptation of Książ Castle, in Wałbrzych, Lower Silesia. The underground structures, which were never finished, were built out of Portland cement, known for its hardness and strength. Excavation, overseen by Organization Todt, was carried out by prisoners of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, forced laborers, and POWs. The ultimate purpose of the tunnels remains unknown even today. One hypothesis is that weapons factories or chemical laboratories were to be installed in the complex. Książ Castle itself was being prepared as a headquarters for the Foreign Ministry of the Third Reich. According to the notes of Albert Speer, Hitler’s chief architect, and other available documents, it is possible that the tunnels cover a larger area than the currently known 3,200 square meters.

Osówka Complex

The longest underground tunnel complex beneath the Owl Mountains, under Osówka Mountain. The complex is comprised of a system of concrete corridors, fortifications, and halls. The Germans began work in mid-1943, with excavations carried out by prisoners from the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The Osówka Complex is located within the administrative borders of the town of Głuszyca, in Wałbrzych County, Lower Silesia.

Layout for a Modern Private Bunker

When designing and constructing a shelter, it is necessary to take into account multiple technical issues: choice of resistance, functional systems, entrances and passages, spaces for basic functions, social rooms, technical zone rooms, load-bearing structural elements, protective layers.

“Do you like the idea of building a shelter but worry that the cost can’t be justified? Well, nothing could be further from the truth! Just think of how invaluable your shelter will be in the event of a wide-scale military conflict, or when a mysterious virus triggers a global pandemic. Remember, when war breaks out, your bank’s computer systems could crash. Then you would lose access to your bank accounts, which could even be wiped clean by a reset. Any one of us could be bankrupted in minutes. What would you be left with then? Only what you have around you. But if one of those possessions is a modern shelter, then you’ll be able to boast of both great fortune and a real shot at survival.”

Curator’s essay:

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW

“An individuality is constant, regardless of its name. Just as the stars above, for which we here beneath, still did not find a name” – wrote Rudolf Kassner, an Austrian philosopher, explaining his original theory of physiognomy in Number and Visage (Zahl und Gesicht, 1919[1]). The fragment quoted above comes from a section of the book where Kassner wonders about the relationship between a name and a person’s character, arguing that the larger the sample, the clearer the similarities between the seemingly unrelated two notions. Later during the course of the book, Kassner’s studies concern themselves with connections between fragments and wholes, between details and data sets and differences amidst representations, projections and observations. The idea crucial to these analyses is already mentioned in the title of the Austrian’s work: “In Number and Visage, Kassner perceives ‘the number’ as pure relation, free from all semantic, empirical, or sensual references. (…) In this sense, for Kassner, ‘the number’ determines the impossible indistinguishability of the individual and duality and ratio of equations between things and non-equations. It is an unimaginable, metalogical unity of two separate and opposing operations – integration and isolation, analogy and differentiation, continuity and discontinuity[2]”.

One can interpret Krassner’s considerations as faraway echoes of Hermeticist traditions, notably the aspects that assume the indivisibility of the universe. This alchemical axiom was stated in a formula “as above, so below” (“quod est superius, est sicut quod est inferius”) taken out of the so-called Emerald Tablet, or: the Tabula Smaragdina, which was supposedly authored by Hermes Trismegistus, a divine entity that would incorporate the traits of both Greece’s Hermes and Egypt’s Thot, a patron deity of the religion – science – art triad. “That which is below is like that which is above / and that which is above is like that which is below / to do the miracle of one only thing[3]” – as a consequence, everything that occurs on one of reality’s planes (physical, psychological etc.) happens in all remaining dimensions. The cited maxim is often used to describe the interdependency of micro- and macrocosm, where the former connotes an individual, and the latter signifies a community or cosmos. Grasping the essence of a phenomenon in microscale leads to the comprehension of its substance in the macroscale and moreover: recognising the principle controlling the detail is necessary to investigate the mysteries of the whole.

In the case of the new works by Karolina Bielawska, the detail operates in a similar fashion: this painterly cycle, conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, began with an investigation into bunkers, understood both as architectural phenomena and habitable terrains extorted from earth, to serve as an asylum in case of a catastrophic event. As the series grew, the shelter (interpreted by the artist as a space for necessary isolation or an artificial “protective layer;” the latter term acting as a title for one the pieces in the cycle) gradually became a more capacious figure. The single space developed into a complex system of subterranean corridors, from a metaphor of solitude enforced by the virus, it morphed into a pars pro toto of a “number” as Kessner understood it. In the paintings, abstraction and figuration, physicality and transcendency, analysis and apophenia meet and co-exist on the same plane, a visual equivalent of the notion described by the famous physiognomist.

“Millions of tons of concrete poured into the quays of the Atlantic Wall have become the embodiment of a thesis about architecture conceived from the simplest of ideas and its subordinate homogeneous matter[4]” – writes Marcin Charciarek commenting on the ambivalence of bunker aesthetics. Their “shape – sign” stands out distinctly against the natural, pale background. The unquestionable, silent and “disinterested” (as Chaciarek poetically puts it) expression of concrete shelters is fascinating. At the same time, when one considers the true purpose and circumstances that accompany the creation of this functional and rational edifice (serving as a home and a tomb at the same time), the dark monolith evokes terror. Architectura militaris conjured similar emotions and associations in the mind of Paul Virilio, describing his observations of such fortifications in Bunker Archeology (Bunker Archéologie, 1967): “A complete series of cultural memories came to mind: the Egyptian mastabas, the Etruscan tombs, the Aztec structures…as if this piece of artillery fortification could be identified as a funeral ceremony, as if the Todt Organization could manage only the organization of a religious space…”[5] Again, the purpose and the aesthetics of the bunker recall Krassner’s definition of “the number” and his explanation that surpasses the classical, “functionally – mathematic” understanding of this term: “Krassner expands its meaning, perceiving ‘the number’ as a relation, and at the same time an aesthetic (puppet, clown), social (system, collective) or philosophical (reason, concept) representation, which implies a specific way of thinking that is not discursive (linear movement from concept to concept), but a configuration (rhythmic movement from figure to figure)[6]”.

Configuration and rhythm are also characteristic of Bielawska’s latest painterly projects: the installation Protective Layer (140 x 180 cm, 2020), which consists of five canvases in five different sizes, serves perhaps as the best example. Each of the elements presents a different kind of tension between the background and the figure (or: the void and the sign). Nevertheless, the whole composition evokes associations with the unity of two separate and opposing operations. Their dissimilarity is enhanced by the material used by the artist: the works’ black fragments are painted with coarse bitumen paint, the blue ones – treated with light gouache. As a result, the difference of colours and textures leads the viewer’s imagination towards animism and assigning intentions, temperament and past to particular shapes. What is important to note is that each interpretation will be a projection depending on the intentions, character and history of the viewer. Thus, we are again drawn close to Kassner’s physiognomy, a theory which supposes an active exploration of the relationship between individual elements, and at the same time, a subject’s identification with the subject of analysis and recognition of its passive aspect. In his introduction to the most famous of Kassner’s writings, Sławomir Leśniak points out the usage of the German word Gesicht (Visage) in the title of the cited work and its semantical equivocation. Das Gesicht connects to ein Schauendes – an entity that sees, observes, and simultaneously ein Geschautes, a phenomenon seen, watched[7].

The Protective Layer series makes us notice that here, the process of interpretation is analogous to alchemical methods. Through analysis and contemplation, from a system based on apparent disharmony, its true content and complete meaning emerge. By analysing individual elements of Bielawska’s cycle – the sources of its concept, technique, material, colour and arrangement – we reach its overall essence. Its disclosure changes the meaning of subsequent components. Thus, the bunkers – self-sufficient and stable structures – are unexpectedly transformed under the influence of art.

Warstwa Ochronna
2020

Warstwa Ochronna to projekt, w którym punktem wyjścia stało się pojęcie schronu.

Współcześnie można do nich dotrzeć głównie w ramach atrakcji turystycznych.

Obok reliktów historycznych pojawiają się współczesne schrony prywatne – tworzone od lat 50-tych XX wieku. Pozwolić na nie mogą sobie osoby majętne. Producenci bunkrów przekonują o ich atrakcyjności: „smutne i szare korytarze? Nic podobnego – w tych bunkrach znajdziecie kina, hydrofoniczne ogrody, medyczną klinikę, siłownie, a nawet spa!”. Popularność prywatnych schronów w ostatnich latach pozwala mówić wręcz o modzie, dyktowanej wzmożonym poczuciem zagrożenia i oczekiwaniem na wieszczony koniec świata.

Wilczy Szaniec

W latach 1941-1944 kwatera główna Adolfa Hitlera i Naczelnego Dowództwa Sił Zbrojnych w lesie gierłoskim, nieopodal wsi Gierłoż i Kętrzyna.

Doprowadziły one do powstania systemu betonowych korytarzy, umocnień i hal.

Wraz z nim stracisz dostęp do swoich kont bankowych, a one same mogą zostać wyzerowane.

„Miliony ton betonu wylane w nabrzeża Wału Atlantyckiego stały się ucieleśnieniem tezy o architekturze stworzonej z najprostszej idei i jej podległej jednorodnej materii[4]” – zauważa Marcin Charciarek, pisząc o ambiwalencji cechującej recepcję estetyki schronów.

W efekcie różnica barw i faktur prowadzi wyobraźnię w kierunku animizmu: jesteśmy w stanie przypisać poszczególnym kształtom intencje, temperament, przeszłość – a każda z interpretacji będzie projekcją zależną od zamiarów, charakteru i historii patrzącego. Sławomir Leśniak wskazuje na użycie niemieckiego słowa Gesicht (Oblicze) w tytule cytowanej pracy austriackiego filozofa: das Gesicht to jednocześnie ein Schauendes – widzące, oglądające i ein Geschautes: widziane, oglądane[7].
